Three days had passed, and I couldn’t stay away any longer. I knew Dev and Navin were all over her all the time. They visited her in the morning, at night, they took her out for walks… And sometimes, I heard what they were doing to her, too. Or with her, to be more exact. Because she liked it. It was becoming unbearable. It got to a point where I thought I had only two options left: to move to a hotel until Petrov came back with the rest of the money and I finally figured out why the hell he’d brought Vera into our home, or to just go over there, drag her out of the cage, and bury myself inside her.

I wasn’t going to move to a hotel. This was my house, and she was a temporary guest. Besides, she was a gift, and so far, only Dev and Navin had enjoyed her. Maybe it was my turn. Why not? Whatever Petrov had planned with her, whatever the reason she was here, under our roof, fucking her wouldn’t change or even remotely affect anything.

I rushed out of my office, slamming the door behind me. I climbed down the stairs so fast that I almost tripped over the rug. It was past midnight, and I could hear her breathing softly and evenly, lost in the land of dreams. I’d been trying to convince myself to go to bed as well, but nothing had worked. I’d ended up pacing my office and drinking too much bourbon. Not that alcohol ever did anything to my kind… I’d have to drink loads of it to get even a little bit tipsy.

Navin and Dev heard me storm down the corridor, and they both jumped out of their beds and met me just as I stopped in front of Vera’s door.

“Aryan, what the fuck? What’s wrong?” Dev asked. He sounded groggy with sleep.

“Nothing’s wrong.” I was almost panting, and it wasn’t because of the exertion. My heart was beating wildly. I was going to do this. Finally. To some extent, it scared me. It scared me that I was unable to stay away from her, that she had such a powerful influence on me even though I’d just seen her once, three days ago.

“Did she do something to… anger you?” Navin sounded concerned about her well-being.

I looked at him as if he was the eighth wonder of the world. “What do you mean? No.”

“Sorry. You just seem… worked up for some reason.”

I shook my head and wrapped my fingers around the doorknob. Slowly, I pushed the door open. I’d calmed down by now, which was good. I didn’t want to scare her. The door creaked, and she stirred in her sleep. The light of the full moon fell upon her face and shoulders. She was wearing a white silk dress, the high heeled sandals had been abandoned on the floor, outside of the cage, and she was sleeping on top of the pillows and the faux fur.
